Yellow Watermelon

Today's prize from the farmers' market: a yellow seedless watermelon.

I don't really think there's a flavor difference between yellow and red watermelons, but the yellow ones are fun to look at. And since this was from a farmer and not a grocery store, it was amazing. Crispy, juicy, and full of watermelon flavor. When the inside of a watermelon is all cracked and "dry" like that, I take it as a sign of good things to come. It's not that the fruit is actually dry; it just looks dry because the cells of the melon are intact instead of all mushed up. Pay attention next time. If you cut into a watermelon and juice immediately drips everywhere and the inside looks slick, it's probably not a very good melon.

Even Blackfoot (my rabbit) seemed more enthused about getting to eat the rind off this than he did last time I gave him a rind from a mediocre red watermelon. I'm so glad he likes to eat the rind more than he likes the part we humans like. That way nothing goes to waste!

  • Peggy,
I have been eating these watermelons all summer long. You're right, they are juicier sweeter and just because they are locally farm they taste better.

Hrm... I definitely prefer the taste of yellow watermelon to red, though the difference is subtle. It's sort of like, yellow watermelon, to me, tastes like the light pink part of red watermelon.
Could be psychological... I only like the crisp parts.
Thanks for the tip on how to know whether the melon is good or not!

  • I live in Hangzhou, China. We eat more yellow watermelon in the winter here than in the summer...but then, we eat crazy amounts of fruit year round.

I find that the yellow watermelon tastes almost like watermelon mixed with a hint of pumpkin. Guess I have a bizarre palate.

We are quite lucky...watermelon grows all over here, so even what you buy in a grocery store is quite fresh. Our red watermelon tends to be round rather than oblong, and smaller. Maybe that makes it taste better than what I have had in the US?

We also get "xiao zhuzi" (tiny oranges...which are amazing) and red bayberries--sometimes called waxberries. I could live off of fruit and sugarcane here!
