Fritelli's Doughnuts

Before I say anything else, I need to emphasize how much I appreciate that Fritelli's calls their fried treats doughnuts, not donuts. They're made out of dough, not do!
Fritelli's is a new "fancy" doughnut shop in Beverly Hills. "Fancy" means the decor is all chocolate brown and sky blue, and they sell MariBelle boxed sets (which I think are some of the most beautifully packaged food items in existence).

I bought a Ceylon Cinnamon twist and an apple fritter. I don't usually like apple fritters, but the place is called Fritelli's. Disappointingly, they did not have apple cider doughnuts today.

In a nutshell: the place is adorable and the business cards are original, but...they're doughnuts. I appreciate the use of real apples and quality cinnamon, but it's still just fried dough. Cold fried dough at that. I'm sure there are local holes in the wall that make fresh, warm doughnuts better than Fritelli's, but I'm not enough of a fan to seek them out. If you love doughnuts, you'd probably be happy to pay the $1 for a unique flavor (gingerbread, pumpkin, latte, peppermint, etc.) but if you don't like doughnuts Fritelli's isn't going to convert you.

Yes, I took a cross section photo. Don't judge me--you know you like it. That's why you're reading this instead of working. I have to say, the caramel glaze on the fritter was pretty good. Very dark, almost bitter, as good as a hard caramel you'd expect to find on a good creme brulee.

  • I agree, nothing special. I was expecting more, but the white dough is flavorless like any other donut from a strip mall. The red velvet were just regular chocolate donuts with red glaze. The boxes are beautiful, but the packaging has more thought than the baking. Basically it's Winchell's in a Tiffany box.
