Fallen Fruit

I love the philosophy behind www.fallenfruit.org. Their message is one that is creative, economical, promotes beauty, educates our community, and is generous of spirit. I really don't see any downside to supporting their mission. Here's an excerpt of their manifesto:

A SPECTER is haunting our cities: barren landscapes with foliage and flowers, but nothing to eat...Our cities are planted with frivolous and ugly landscaping, sad shrubs and neglected trees, whereas they should burst with ripe produce. Great sums of money are spent on young trees, water and maintenance...

WE ASK all of you to petition your cities and towns to support community gardens and only plant fruit-bearing trees in public parks...Demand that all parking lots be landscaped with fruit trees which provide shade, clean the air and feed the people...

FALLEN FRUIT is a mapping and manifesto for all the free fruit we can find. Every day there is food somewhere going to waste. We encourage you to find it, tend and harvest it. If you own property, plant food on your perimeter. Share with the world and the world will share with you...

  • i'm going to have to disagree with this one. While I still plan on genetically engineering a virus to kill off all the ugly, non shade producing, non fruit/nut bearing, non soil retaining palm trees. Having fruit trees everywhere is a huge pain. I remember my dad planted an apple tree and a grape vine in the backyard. The fruit from both was so incredibly sour that they were inedible. But they produced so much we couldn't even keep up and much fell to the ground attracting flies and other wild animals to the backyard. And it was only 2 small plants. I could only imagine what it would be like if all the trees lining every street were like this. And how would you like to get busted windshields from apples and such falling 30 ft everytime you park. Or getting slammed on the head with a widowmaker pear when you go walking or running?

  • That's why people need to be smart about what they plant. Fruit trees like apples or pears wouldn't be appropriate everywhere, but bushes like mint and lavendar would be harmless and economical in most public areas.

Besides, growing apples and grapes in Southern California is kind of an exercise in self-punsishment. Every city planning committee would have to decide what works best for them.

  • In Portland, berries of all kinds grow wild everywhere. The streets are clean (not littered with squish berries), and all the kids know what different berries look like. I think there's something to be said for that
