Wedding Planning Survey

Okay, I'm willing to concede I might be alone on this, so I'm posting a survey.

Do people think a fondue fountain plus table exploding with marshmallows, crackers, fruit, etc. at a wedding is:

  • an unbelievably fun fantasy come true for a chocophile
  • childishly tacky, like a cotton candy machine or a popcorn cart

The fondue table, coffee service, bar, cocktail tables, chairs, and band would be scattered around the room surrounding a dance floor.

The alternative would be what they call a Viennese dessert table, which would be a display of fresh fruit, chocolate confections, mini dessert pastries, and cheese wheels plus accoutrements.

INTERIM RESULTS:

Looks like consensus is divided. I was originally dead set against a fondue, but let's post PROS:

  • it seems like a lot of people think older folks will be impressed by a tower of chocolate. They won't be that hungry after dinner and cake anyway, they just want something amusing to look at. The entertainment value is pretty much the only reason I'm even considering it.
  • there will be plenty of fruit, so people who don't want more chocolate after dinner can nosh on that.
  • a dessert table has the potential to get messy too.
  • a fondue fountain is a conversation starter and a reason to mingle while assembling your plate.

CONS

  • I personally find warm, wet, dripping chocolate disgusting. To me, when people dip their stuff in chocolate and then put it on a plate it just looks like a motley assortment of cheap food covered in brown glop. And when people start sucking on their skewers and fingers...oh god, I think I've convinced myself not to go this route.
  • I don't really like my fruit and my chocolate to mix. Chocolate covered strawberries, shockingly enough, do nothing for me. Warm chocolate usually just makes fruit taste more sour. But hey, I won't be eating much of it so what does that matter?
  • it won't be quality chocolate, probably Hershey's or Ghiardelli. I doubt they'd let me bring the chocolate. Actually, whatever chocolate they serve is 99.9% sure to be whatever's sold in the SYSCO catalog.
  • it's almost guaranteed that someone will lose a piece of food in the fountain and start fishing for it.
  • selfishly, I can have little boxes on hand for people to take home truffles and mini pastries if we can't finish everything. Leftover chocolate is just going to go to waste (and I won't state it outright, but let's just say the chocolate going to waste would actually be the best case scenario).
  • Drunk people and a brown fountain. Sigh.

  • My vote - Viennese dessert table. A chocolate fountain is too tempting, I might skip dinner and just dive straight into it and gobble up all the chocolate :-)

  • they both sound so good! but i suppose a viennese dessert table would be classier. :)

  • I want the fountain. It can be classy if arranged nicely.

  • I've been to several events weddings and non with the fountains. They have never impressed me because... A, Fountains are messy (someone always gets a stain, chocolate ends up all over the table) and the chocolate flowing through them is hardly Sharfen Berger (Because even if it it IS, they have to thin it out). I think your dessert 'station' idea is lovely. But if you are going to use different vendors clear it through your caterer first. One of the last big events I helped with (P.'s company party) the main caterer was PISSED because we brough in Tamales from another vendor.

  • We know at least one vote for the fondue, but you know, this ain't the Belaggio, the fountain is overkill. Besides, what if you want (god forbid) non-chocolate desserts? I vote for the dessert table with a lot of cheeeeessssse. -T.

  • Dessert Table. I think the fondue will end up being "a chocolate mess". Hmmm I've heard that before somewhere.....

  • We had a giant chocolate fountain at my company xmas party a year ago and it was big hit. The Xmas party was formal with an Academy Awards theme at the old federal reserve building in SF so it can be classy for your wedding. Also, It's a great conversation starter and will help your guest mingle with each other.

I vote yay on the fountain with lots of fruit for those non-chocolate lovers!

  • I think the fondue fountain can be very elegant, and not tacky if done well. The elegance can be enhanced with the choices of stuff to dip and the presentation of said items. Previous comments are insightful about the quality of the chocolate. I say test the fountain first. If it is up to your high standards for chocolate go for it.

  • I was at a wedding in LA this past weekend that had the fountain. To my surprise, it didn't attract much attention at all, and i think alot of people ended up passing on dessert because of it. It didn't seem corny to me, not appealing either. I think Dommy! makes a good point about the mess, especially if there are kiddies.

Chalk up another vote for the Viennese.

  • psssssst! (where was the wedding and was it awesome?)

By Blogger Pei, At 4/02/2007 05:50:00 PM

  • I don't know how you counted the results to be even. Only Problem Child wants fondue, and you know she's biased. - T.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At 4/02/2007 06:15:00 PM

  • There were some verbal votes. I use the term "even" very generously.

By Blogger Pei, At 4/02/2007 06:44:00 PM

  • Plus, I said divided. I never said even.

By Blogger Pei, At 4/02/2007 06:45:00 PM

  • from your interim post it looks like you have made a decision.

By Blogger John, At 4/02/2007 07:52:00 PM

  • chocolate fountain = waste of money better spent on vodka

By Blogger William, At 4/02/2007 09:48:00 PM

  • (hi, we've never 'talked', but i've seen you on chowhound and you inspired me to fall in love with doughboys red velvet, sooo....)

Have you considered maybe a "candy" table - stock it with wrapped stuff that you love and let people pick and choose? Just an idea that doesn't involve a sticky-gooey fountain, but still has chocolate...good, quality chocolate...

By Blogger Mercedes, At 4/03/2007 09:16:00 AM

  • Thanks, Mercedes, and welcome to the commenting portion of the site!

I went with the fondue vs. Viennese options because that's what the venue I'm at offers. I'm sure they can do candy too but...again I show I'm a freak...I hate candy.

By Blogger Pei, At 4/03/2007 10:13:00 AM

  • It's not you, it's me. People look at me like I have a third eye when I confess that. A table filled with my personal favorite candies would be pretty depressingly sparse.

By Blogger Pei, At 4/03/2007 10:14:00 AM

  • Chocolate fountain? No. How about fresh fruit and cheese?

By Blogger claire, At 4/03/2007 10:30:00 AM

  • Not a freak, trust me! :)

It was just an idea, I think a table of Vienesse desserts would really be lovely - and you'd avoid the brown goo issue. I'm a big fan of fresh fruit (*drool*) and single-serve portions of things always go over well.

    Plus? A lot of variety.

  • The candy bar thing is about overdone now as the fountain now... Thanks Knotties...

But I did go to a wedding in SF recently where they had an EXCELLENT fruit and cheese plate at the Cocktail hour featurine a small but well edited collection of California Wines. It was a huge hit because everyone loves cheese and the 'chowish' among us had a blast testing out the wines and cheeses and coming up with our own 'pairings'... LOL! :D

  • Heehee...knotties. What a funny name.

For those of you who are wedding innocents, Dommy! means the crazed brides who scour knot.com for the latest trends in wedding pizzaz.

I'm actually much too lazy and pig-headed to use knot.com. I want things my way, not based on some formula or colored by what I see everyone else doing.

  • Pei, I'm that anon that went to the wedding last w/end in LA -- it was awesome indeed. It was at the La Venta Inn in Palos Verdes. My only quibble was that it didn't have a huge dancefloor, and who doesn't love the get-down boogie that goes down at weddings ? But it's an absolutely gorgeous venue.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At 4/03/2007 04:26:00 PM

  • How was the FOOD?!?! I'm considering using Verandas, which has the same owner as La Venta. Thank you so much for chiming in! I need all the positive reports I can to reassure me. You can reply here or e-mail me: chezpeiatgmaildotcom. Thank you!

  • The food was actually surprisingly good for a wedding meal. A nice bread basket with plenty of variety, pretty good salad (the standard walnut/bluecheese treatment, but I enjoyed it b/c it was properly dressed), and the entree was a combo of steak & fish with some steamed veggies (carrots and stuff). Okay, so I understand the limitations when it comes to doing a steak in this setting -- impossible to do cook-to-order. In light of that, even though the steak was cooked longer than my preference, they managed to keep it very tender & juicy. I was actually quite impressed with that. The fish was very fresh seabass and tasted like it. I remember taking a bite and being surprised at it tasting like, go figure, fish. You see seabass all over the place, and more often than not, it's a yawner. Oh btw, the mashed potatoes were excellent. Very rich.

Overall, this ranks up there in the "very good" category of wedding meals. Which says alot if you ask me, b/c most wedding meals are pathetic. I've been to one mobster-grand Italian wedding and that remains to be the only wedding meal that I thought was almost life-changing.

As you I'm sure already know, the main thing for you is to enjoy yourself. The main thing for me as an attendee at weddings is to drink the bar dry.

  • Well put! Thank you so much for your long response. I really appreciate it a lot, as it makes it so much easier to trust the kitchen and not stress about whether they're up to the task.

As for your list of what's important, right on!

By Blogger Pei, At 4/04/2007 02:47:00 PM

  • No problem pei.

For the record, I'm much more interested in the savoury posts. Having said that, I have to say the best "dessert" at a wedding that I had was actually a midnight "snack" which consisted of a bazillion cheeses, meats (including roast beef, roast pork), and other savoury treats, along with a bazillion different sweets (cakes, tarts, cookies, etc), and a bazillion different fruits. This was the kind of midnight snack I would like to have every single night and die happily at the precious age of 30. So if you have alot of food-lovers on your guestlist that you want to make happy, and it's w/in your limits, that's an idea.

Have fun at your wedding. And do try to actually eat something yourself.
