Layers Design Studio and Cake Divas

Second deposit down! First was the hotel, today was the band. The florist, photographer, lighting company, bakery, invitations, favors, and little odds and ends all seem like small potatoes in comparison to those biggies. Some fun today came in the form of free cake!
I picked up tasting boxes from Layers Design Studio in Sherman Oaks and Cake Divas in Culver City (yes, of Food Network fame). Display cakes were equally beautiful at both places, but I forgot my camera! Layers wins for presentation of sample boxes.
The cakes, however, were much too sweet for me. The only one that was not too sugary was the white cake with berry jam filling. I actually really loved the spice cake and banana cake, but to me those are breakfast foods rather than for after dinner at a party.
I think I like the cake at Cake Divas better. I'm going to take a break and compare them again later with a fresh palate, but so far I LOVE the lemon cake with passion fruit mousse filling. Isn't it fun how they have a few cubes of each flavor and the frosting separate so you can mix and match? The owner also said that since I don't have much of a sweet tooth, she suggests the almond cake with an almond mousse. Less sugar, with intense almond flavor. I think with a raspberry filling, that would come close to princess cake--my favorite!
So so far, Cake Divas is the front runner for cakes. Great flavors, not too sweet for a non-Asian bakery, generous portions (their 100 person cake looks like other people's 125 person cakes), super nice staff, beautiful designs, plus they're on Casa Del Mar's official vendor list so working with them should be easy.

  • We use Cake Divas for every birthday in the family. Their red velvet is awesome, their chocolate is awesome, their basic wedding cake is awesome, their carrot is awesome...I think that's all the flavors I've had. They make amazing patterns on the outside as well. Great people. Good choice!

  • Pei, I haven't been following your cake search too closely, but did you try SweetCake? I researched a wedding cake article and had the pleasure of tasting many, many cakes. I felt the same about Layers (too sweet), and Divas were definitely great. But I really really liked SweetCake, awesome cakes and beautiful designs. IN Hollywood, i think.

  • No problem Pei, tell them Karyn from Ashton and Demi's said how great we think they are! They did their wedding cake, birthday cakes, etc...

  • Cake Divas used to be good. not anymore. i used to get cakes from them all the time, when Joan Spitler was a respectable person, but she has since allowed the big obnoxious fat Leigh Grode to run all over her. If you think Sweet Lady Jane treats you like shit, try working with Leigh for a minute... loud, obnoxious, unprofessional, and a nasty excuse for a human being. Joan should buy Leigh out and regain her self-worth.

  • Unfortunately you never went to the 'best' place. Rosebud Cakes makes all of the above mentioned look like amateurs. Every cake I have purchased there was a totally complete work of edible art. Prices were always appropriate for the work. Rosebud has always had the best tasting cake and the friendliest environment. Some of the places that were mentioned above are were started by people who learned what they 'know' from Elin at Rosebud. I have tried other places , but Rosebud is the supreme cake shop in the L.A. area. Don't take my word for it, though, try it yourself. They are on Robertson blvd. in Beverly Hills

  • I worked at Rosebud's for nearly a decade, and ate an ungodly amount of their cake, and am also friends with Janelle (the owner of Layers) who I worked with there.Janelle and Elin have totally different styles, from their cake flavors to their decorating, and I bow down in awe before both of them.
Elin's cake flavors, like her decoration,is big,in your face and irrepressible.I would consider it a little sweeter, and a little stronger than Janelle's.- Therefore,I was surprised to read people felt that Layers was too sweet. I think the flavors are like Janelle's decorating-very refined, meticulous, with a lot of attention to detail.Subtle. (You can see it in the packaging of the samples.)
Maybe it is just because I have the option of eating cake every day,but who wants the same damn thing all the time-viva la difference!
What is with all the anonymous comments anyways-don't say anything you aren't proud to have your name on!
    Cake now and forever-
