Pei Are Tired

I are so tired. There's no time to post the bazillion photos I've taken in the last week, but suffice it to say that both Manhattan and DC have been amazing so far. A quick rundown of food destinations visited:

Minibar at Cafe Atlantico in DC (WOW!)

In NYC:

Jean-Georges
L'Atelier du Robuchon
Katz's Deli
Russ & Daughters for lox
Zabar's bagels
H&H bagels and smoked whitefish salad
Manhattan Diner (boring, but it still gets to be on the list)
Cafe Sabarsky
Wolfgang's Steakhouse
Momofuku Noodle Bar
Chikalicious dessert bar
Babbo
Third Floor Lounge & Cafe (Koreatown)
Gahm Mi Oak
Brooklyn Botanical Garden's event catering staff
Prospect Park farmers' market
Chocolates by the Bald Guy

The least impressive were of course the diner and Koreatown selections, but those weren't our choices and we didn't expect much going in. The two I will definitely revisit on future treks to this side of the continent are definitely Atlantico, Momofuku, and Chikalicious. Everything else has been great but predictable; these three places managed to surprise and delight me completely.

  • Wow, how do you do it and not weigh 1,000 pounds?

  • LOL. Believe me, I do not normally eat anything like this. I actually feel kind of ill. I wish I'd planned a few more homey meals, and I'm really looking forward to making homemade dumplings tonight with my friend.

The only thing keeping me from gaining weight on this trip is a LOT of walking. I walked from 10a.m. until 7p.m. on Sunday, stopping pretty much only for lunch. That must have been at least a thousand calories burnt right there.

We also ate small meals. For example, we shared two appetizers and a pasta at Babbo for dinner, each had half a sandwich at Katz's, and ate about three slices of lox at Russ & Daughters. I want to try everything; I hardly ever eat all of anything on vacation.

  • Excellent choices!! :) But yes, when P. and i go out on vacation, we plan at least one 'detox' meal midway to help us not feel totally off...

  • For me, that was a roasted vegetables wrapped in a large flatbread at Bread Line in DC. So refreshing! That, and for dinner that day I chose tom ka gai soup even though we have plenty of that in LA.

The usual preaching also applies: if you work out and eat right most of the time, week-long binges aren't so hard to recover from!

  • are you back from DC? Can you list all your favorites in DC..will be there next week.

  • Still in DC, but can't list favorites because honestly, I'm all eaten out. We're mostly eating at casual spots and eating at home. My friend out here and I don't get to see each other so cooking together is fun. :)

Cafe Atlantico was incredible, though. You probably can't snag a seat at MiniBar at this point, but the rest of the restaurant looked popular and the food smelled great if you want contemporary cuisine with a Latin flair.

  • Pei, can you list the good casual places you've eaten in DC? I'm more about eating casual anyways.

    I'm gonna check out:
    Zaytinya
    Etete
    Two Amys
    Brasserie Beck
    Matchbox
    Sushi Taro
    Ben's chili bowl
    Cafe Ettore
    Jaleo
    Zola
    Taberna del Alabardero

any bakeries or farmer's market that are good there?

  • Well, this is Pei's friend in DC, and as for your list, I can enthusiastically recommend Zaytinya and Matchbox (although be prepared for slow service at Zaytinya), and Ben's Chili Bowl, Taberna, Zola, Jaleo and Two Amys are all reported to be good, but I haven't tried them personally. The Dupont Circle Farmer's Market is great, and as for bakeries, Firehook is pretty good.
