Oden

In our continuing effort to eat more vegetables and less meat, we had oden last night.

Oden is a Japanese soup. The ingredients are usually root vegetables like carrots, daikon and potatoes along with a variety of fishcakes and fish balls, which are processed seafood formed into bouncy spheres. The soup is flavored with soy sauce, sake, sugar, and bonito or vegetable broth.

You can try Ten Ren, which has shops all over Los Angles and the Bay Area. I think there are two shops in SF and one in Richmond.

Look for High Mountain Oolong from Taiwan or Formosa (Taiwan's old name under Portuguese colonization). It should be expensive, easily $30+

I recently saw Formosan oolong at Whole Foods for $12, but I haven't tried it. It's just interesting that it's starting to hit the US markets after flying under the radar for a long time.
