I sure hope a certain someone doesn't check my blog today. In fact, I think I'm going to auto-delay this post so she doesn't see it ahead of time!
What could it be, all rolled up and packaged for gifting?
Why, a baby blanket of course! Homemade blankets are my go-to gift for new babies. They're an excuse for me to sew, and the fabric store always has an exciting new fabric that's cuter than whatever's at the department stores. For example, I love that this print is undeniably baby-appropriate, but does not invove large cotton candy swaths of pink or blue. It's a great blanket for any baby who loves zoo animals--which means all babies, right?

What fabric store stocks such adorable baby prints in SF?
Peapod Fabrics in the Inner Sunset. I think it's near 17th/Judah but you can Google the exact address.
it's a tiny store owned by a Japanese lady. She has exquisite taste. Everything in the store is very modern or modern-vintage. It's not your grandma's fabric store! Britex might have cornered the market on quantity, but Peapod has nothing but quality.
I've also occasionally seen identical fabrics for 1.5 times the price at Britex. Peapod is very reasonably priced.
Adorable! What size did you make yours? Flannel lining?
The size is roughly 44x44" because the fabric was 45" wide. It's a little big to wrap an infant in, but I didn't want to waste any fabric. Bigger is better, it'll be useful as she grows.
The backing is a slightly shaggy chenille. It's not quite as luxurious as the furry backing called "minky," but it is soft and was really well priced at FabriX discount fabric store on Clement. I was in a hurry and didn't want to deal with batting, backing, and binding so that fabric did triple duty.
Peapod sounds amazing, I will get out there this weekend - thank you so much for taking the time to answer!
