A new food truck is a thing of beauty, and the Liba Falafel Truck is one of the most beautiful food trucks I've ever seen.
Walking by City Hall after a trip to the library, I noticed a new food truck parked on Civic Center. As I approached, the fragrance of deep fried falafels filled the air. And then, I kid you not, the clouds parted and the sun came out. It was a sign. I had to stop for lunch. [
It was a decision I did not regret. Liba may be truck food, but the falafel setup is pure Amsterdam. After picking up a toasted pita filled with two crispy, fluffy falafel, you head over to the salad bar and pile your pita high with toppings. Liba currently offers fifteen homemade toppings, whereas every other place I've seen in SF just hands you a sandwich with some raw vegetables and sauce. It's tough to decide what to eat, but luckily you're allowed to fill your pita as much as you'd like--you're just not allowed to swing back around the salad bar halfway through your meal!
Here's the complete list of Liba's toppings bar offerings. My favorites were the cardamom dill pickles, spiced carrot ribbons, tomato ginger chutney, olive tapenade, and the incredibly fresh and creamy feta. I hear the rosemary peanuts and harissa hot sauce are also not to be missed.
Small pitas (the size I got) are $5, and large pitas are $9. Sweet potato fries, homemade desserts, and sodas are also available. The truck is at Civic Center Tuesdays 11am-2pm, and in Chinatown on California and Grant on alternating Thursdays. For a complete schedule, check Facebook or Twitter!
