There are a ton of restaurants on Clement Street, and I have no delusions that I'll ever try them all. But today, we checked D&A off the list. We got there between 11am-3pm and opted for the $4.50 lunch specials. For the price:quality ratio, I give it a thumbs up!
Hainan chicken: this must have been at least a quarter chicken if not more. It came with two huge bowls of chicken-flavored rice, pickled daikons and carrots, salted peanuts, and ginger scallion dipping sauce. Everything was really tasty except the rice, which was mediocre. Hainan chicken is supposed to come with really moist, fragrant rice glistening with chicken fat. This missed the mark in that it just tasted like cheap takeout restaurant jasmine rice, but it wasn't bad. And since the chicken was juicy, flavorful, and abundant, I didn't need much rice.
J had the tripes and rice. I stole a piece and thought it was good. Cooked until tender and flavored all the way through, the tripe was as good as at most dim sum restaurants.
Next time, we're going to opt for the "3 dishes for $19.99" special. We saw a lot of families ordering this, and the 3 dishes look like enough food for 6 people. For example, one family had a heaping plate of mixed seafood and bok choy that looked like enough for three adults. I also noticed a braised tofu dish that looked good. With over a hundred choices on the specials menu, I'm pretty sure there's something for everyone. With so many great deals on simple, diner-style Chinese food, D&A is a great inner Richmond choice for those on a budget.
